The nursing students will form three groups, with two
members in each group. One group will be assigned care of
the mother, and will research the the health care needs of a mother who
is about to deliver in a level one hospital that does not have
obstetrical or newborn facilities. The second group will be assigned
care of the baby, and will research the health care needs of the newborn
infant. The third group will be assigned the responsibility for
contacting, communicating, and supporting family members and other
involved parties. This group will also be involved with transporting and
transfer of mother and infant to an appropriate facility after delivery.
Each group will
document their individual care plans, using the five steps of the
Nursing Process. They will then come together and share their findings
with each other, followed by role playing a mock delivery.
