Pedagogy Components

Multiple Intelligence

These adult learners enjoy written information and will benefit from reading designated sites on the internet and presenting information to their colleagues regarding the different roles and responsibilities.

Visual and spatial learners enhance their learning and retention through pictures, images, graphs and charts.  They will enjoy the multiple web sites available for review and further gain of knowledge.

These learners love "hands on" and will enjoy role playing a mock imminent delivery and birth.

The adult learner who is logical and mathematical will learn best through reasoning and organizing their data.  Understanding the order of priority to facilitate the optimal care for mother and baby is key to assimilating the knowledge and order of priority.

These learners love independent research and information gathering and will enjoy the individual assignments.

Interpersonal intelligences enjoy and thrive best through interaction with others.  The webquest is designed for group participation and learning.

Music and audio effects appeal to this type of intelligence.  Integrating music to the webquest would be appreciated by this type of learner.

The adult learner with a "naturalistic" intelligence learns best through interactions within the environment.  Although emergency nursing is a specialty in itself, delivering babies in the emergency department is not common practice. Simulating an imminent delivery will enhance the comfort level of this type of learner in the event a real imminent delivery occurs.

This webquest is designed for ED nurses who are not experts in labor and delivery and do not have the resources readily available within their facility. In the event a patient arrives to their ER pregnant and a  delivery is imminent, the staff must be comfortable and knowledgeable to provide the optimal care possible before transfer to another facility with OB services can occur. Reviewing and simulating the fundamentals with this special patient is essential to facilitate functionality and a comfort level in the event it truly happens.

Learning Styles

These learners approach problem solving and learning with a creative approach.  They think "outside the box" and will process the information obtained during the exercise by utilizing their creativity and own ideas for long term memory. These learners will appreciate this learning assignment in order to feel more prepared during a real delivery in an ER setting.

These learners will apply the information and knowledge through structure and organization.  They benefit from the rubric that clearly defines the objectives and goals of the webquest assignment. They will enjoy using the computer and engaging in the activities outlined in this webquest.

These learners will enjoy the learning group involvement and role playing.

These learners will benefit from the creativity of this webquest and it's application to clinical practice.

Bloom's Taxonomy

Remembering/Understanding:

The nurses will automatically remember and understand the birthing process from nursing school and clinical experience.

Applying:

The nurses will apply their previous knowledge and experience during their clinical OB rotation and their experience from this webquest to the current situation

Analyzing:

The nurses will analyze and address the needs of the expectant patient and feel comfortable and confident with the care that is required

Evaluating:

The nurses will continually evaluate and document the events as they occur

Creating:

At this level, the nurses will apply their critical thinking skills during the care of the patient and anticipate any changes in the acuity that could potentially cause untoward effects or changes in the condition of the mother and/or newborn

Emotion

Emotions have a significant impact on learning and the birth of a baby in an ER is a situation that automatically produces an emotional climate.  Realistically, the comfort level of the nurses may be comprised due to the infrequency of births in an ER.  Creating a comfortable learning environment while processing the content of the learning will produce a positive experience in the event an unanticipated birth in the ER occurs.  The instructional activities designed in this webquest are aimed at producing positive emotional connections associated with the learning environment and the emotional climate in which the learning takes place and applied to the actual event.

Humor

Incorporating humor into the learning environment enhances retention by providing more oxygen to the brain.   It also can decrease stress, blood pressure, muscle tension, boost immune defenses, and cause an increase in the release of endorphins  causing a feeling of euphoria.  In order to captivate our desired audience, our introduction was created to stimulate laughter and engage interest in the assignment.  A birth in an ER inherently creates tension and anxiety to the healthcare providers involved.  Incorporating humor into the lesson will provide a positive climate to build on previous knowledge and contribute to retention of additional information. Unique situations are ongoing in the ER and the scenario designed is a situation that could possibly happen as unique as it may seem and as infrequent a birth in the ER occurs. Anything is possible working in an ER and the learners will hopefully enjoy the twist of events as they regain their self confidence!

Nursing Process

Assessment=The ER nurse assesses the acuity of the patient and recognizes an imminent delivery is near and gathers appropriate equipment

Diagnosis=The ER nurse identifies the needs of the patient and establishes a nursing diagnosis

Planning=The ER nurse develops a plan of care for the patient to maintain an optimal safe and healthy environment/delivery

Implementation=The ER nurse implements the plan of care

Evaluation=The ER nurse continually reassesses and documents the condition of the patient and her newborn until transfer to a facility with obstetrics has been completed
