Introduction

If your doctor has told you that you or a loved one is appropriate for Hospice services, you no doubt have many questions.  This website is designed to answer some of those questions and to provide you with resources for additional information.

The Federal Government defines Hospice as an approach to caring for terminally ill individuals that stresses palliative care (relief of pain and uncomfortable symptoms), as opposed to curative care.  Services provided include physician and nursing services, medications, durable medical equipment, supplies, counseling and bereavement services, and spiritual support.

An interdisciplinary team consisting of physicians, nurses, social workers, spiritual advisors, pharmacists, therapists, and volunteers work together with the client, family and friends to develop and implement a comprehensive plan of care.

Hospice services are provided wherever the client considers home whether it is in the community, nursing or assisted living facilities, shelters, daycare centers, prisons, hotels, etc.  Services can also be provided in hospitals on a limited basis.

Medicare and Medicaid pay for Hospice services as well as most insurance plans.  Hospice services can also be provided on a sliding scale payment system.  No one is denied Hospice services due to inability to pay.
