To complete this quest you will be placed on a team of two.  One member will be a labor and delivery (L&D) nurse and the other a critical care or intensive care (ICU) nurse.  Each team will be given the name of a disease process or syndrome that can manifest itself during pregnancy.  You will assume that as a direct result of the sequelae of her condition, your obstetric patient will require treatment in an intensive care setting following her delivery.

A template has been provided for you which will assist you in creating a fact sheet that will be utilized by L&D & ICU staff to bridge the gap in knowledge and care that too often occurs with critically ill obstetric patients.  This gap potentially and frequently leads to negative patient outcomes.  The work you do in here will allow your colleagues to construct a plan of care that will ensure timely and appropriate care for critically ill obstetric patients seeking care at your institution.

Step One: Teams will be formed including one L&D nurse and one ICU nurse.  Collectively the teams will decide which disease process listed below each team will focus on.

Step Two: Sixty minutes will be spent with members individually reviewing the links provided and gathering the information needed to complete the fact sheets for their team's disease or syndrome.  The L&D nurse will research the intrapartum care and collect the information required to complete these sections of the fact sheet while the ICU nurse will research and collect information pertinent to the care of the critically ill woman postpartum.

Step Three: Each team will reunite and collaboratively create their fact sheets using the information collected during their research and from their own experiences.

Step Four: Lastly, the team members will work together to produce a PowerPoint presentation that will be delivered to the entire group followed by distribution of the completed fact sheet for use in the L&D and ICU settings.
