Women in the United States are facing a growing crisis as the median age of an American female increases to almost 38 years.  The overall delay in child bearing and improvements in medical technology have led to a greater number of high risk pregnancies and high risk deliveries.

After selection of one of the most common syndromes or diseases which affect pregnant women in the United States, you will develop a fact sheet for use in Labor & Delivery (L&D) and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) settings by nursing staff caring for these critically ill women.  In addition, you will present your syndrome or disease to the other teams using a PowerPoint Presentation to facilitate their learning of your disease or syndrome.

At the completion of this WebQuest, you will have knowledge of:

  • Normal physiological changes in pregnancy

  • Five diseases and syndromes common in pregnancy

  • Pathophysiology and the typical course of these diseases and syndromes

  • Anticipated Clinical Manifestations

  • Technology that may be needed to monitor patient and the variations in obstetric patients

  • Possible Pharmacological Therapies

  • Lab Work and Potential Variations from Normal

  • Nursing Interventions and Expected Outcomes

  • Psychosocial Needs of the woman and her family
