Goals & Objectives

At the end of this field trip WebQuest, students will be able to:

  • Understand how to plan a field trip using the Internet.
  • Explain the different pieces that make up a field trip.
  • Read and interpret different web sites.
  • Collect and analyze information using specific guidelines.
  • Calculate prices for each field trip.
  • Summarize findings to a group and compare other group members' data.
  • Present conclusive data and validate their knowledge with the field trip choice.

 

Curriculum Standards

The following New Jersey State Curriculum Standards are addressed through this WebQuest:

Language Arts

The students will…

  1. Use library classification systems, print or electronic, to locate information.
  2. Draw conclusions from information and data gathered.
  3. Use graphic organizers to assist with planning writing.
  4. Use computer word-processing applications during parts of the writing process.
  5. Understand and use a checklist and/or rubric to improve writing
  6. Present and discuss writing with other students.
  7. Apply elements of grade-appropriate rubrics to improve writing.
  8. Use Standard English conventions that are developmentally appropriate to the grade level: sentences, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling.
  9. Write for a variety of purposes (e.g., to inform, entertain, persuade) and audiences (e.g., self, peers, community).
  10. Stay focused on topic.
  11. Take turns.
  12. Use vocabulary related to a particular topic.
  13. Use pictures to support an oral presentation.
  14. Use appropriate strategies to prepare, rehearse, and deliver an oral presentation, such as word choice, expression, eye contact, and volume.
  15. Follow two-and three-step directions.
  16. Begin to demonstrate an awareness of different media forms and how they contribute to communication.
  17. Identify the central theme and main ideas in different media.

 

Mathematics

The students will…

  1. Develop the meanings of the four basic arithmetic operations by modeling and discussing a large variety of problems.
    • Addition and subtraction: joining, separating, comparing
  2. Construct, use, and explain procedures for performing whole number calculations with:
    • Pencil-and-paper
    • Mental math
    • Calculator
  3. Count and perform simple computations with money.
    • Cents notation (˘)
  4. Select pencil-and-paper, mental math, or a calculator as the                 appropriate computational method in a given situation depending on the context and numbers
  5. Check the reasonableness of results of computations.
  6. Use real-life experiences, physical materials, and technology to construct meanings for numbers.
  7. Use technology to gather, analyze, and communicate mathematical information.
  8. Recognize that mathematics is used in a variety of contexts outside of mathematics.
  9. Analyze and evaluate the mathematical thinking and strategies of others.
  10. Learn mathematics through problem solving, inquiry, and discovery.
  11. Collect, generate, organize, and display data in response to questions, claims, or curiosity.

Technology Literacy
The students will…

  1. Recognize the need for accessing and using information.
  2. Identify and use web browsers, search engines, and directories to obtain information to solve real world problems.
  3. Locate specific information by searching a database.
  4. Practice appropriate Internet etiquette.
  5. Use basic technology vocabulary.
  6. Use basic features of an operating system (e.g., accessing programs, identifying and selecting a printer, finding help).
  7. Use basic computer icons.

 

Thinking & Communication Skills

·        Knowledge: list cost, activities, bus information, label help worksheets, arrange field trip information of importance

·        Comprehension: Discuss which field trip is a better option by following specific guidelines

·        Application: Choose field trip and activities, calculate costs, interpret data

·        Analysis: Compare field trips and activities, analyze differences,  calculate trip costs, examine bus company

·        Synthesis: combine data, create a presentation, summarize group’s findings

·        Evaluation: self-assess using rubric and support position of presentation
