  Exploring Native Americans

Your friends have joined you for a walk along the Nashua River in Fitchburg, Massachusetts.  As you walk by the clear, flowing stream, a huge bald eagle lands in a towering tree nearby.  "Look around, boys and girls," announces the Eagle.  "The River, known as the River With the Pebbled Bottom, has changed over the past 600 years.  I have seen this forest when the Nashaway or Nipmuc Tribe called this home."  "Wow," your excited friends respond.  "Could you bring us back to that time so that we can see what it was like for our Native Americans?"  "Hop onto my back," invited the Eagle, "and hold on tightly.  We will travel around the United States, and I will help you learn about some of the Native Americans who lived in our country.  You will learn the ways of the First People." http://users.rcn.com/abisson.massed/nativeam.htm

Native American WebQuest

Long ago, North America was very different from the way it is today. The first people arrived in North America from Asia by crossing a land bridge that temporarily connected the continents. Since these were the first people to live in North America, they are known as Native Americans. Many different cultures of Native Americans developed over the course of time. Culture refers to the people's way of life. Each culture was affected by the natural resources that were available to them. Natural resources were used as tools for survival providing such necessities as food, clothing, and shelter.

  Native Americans
in the Natural World

Many stereotypes exist concerning American Indians. Contrary to popular belief, not all Indians or Native Americans lived in teepees and rode on painted horses as they are depicted in many of the old western movies. Native Americans from different parts of what is now the United States lived in many different tribes. Each tribe had their own culture: customs, language, myths, and religion. In this WebQuest, you will read and learn about four Native American tribes from different parts of the United States: North, South, East, and West.

  NATIVE   AMERICANS

We believe that the original inhabitants of North America arrived thousands of years ago.  Many names have been used to describe these people.  We will refer to them as Native Americans or Indians.  During the last several hundred years, these Native Americans have suffered many hard times, often, unfortunately, when coming into contact with the "newly" arrived European Immigrants.
As you explore the various activities included in this WebQuest, try to get a sense of where the Indians were in their beliefs, what caused differences in their lifestyles,  how important the earth and nature were to them, and their interactions with other groups of people.
