objectives:

The students will be able to:

  • Locate the time zones in the US and in the World. Use maps to find the time in different time zones.
  • Locate Volcanoes and Earthquakes around the World.  Find a connection between plate tectonics and the locations of these areas of disturbances.
  • Locate areas of High and Low Pressure on a map.  Predict the weather in states across the US.
  • Locate the Grand Canyon , Mount St. Helens, and points of reference.  Find the latitude and longitude of these areas.
  • Use Google- Earth to zoom in on Bloomingdale.  Discover what happens to the resolution are the area decreases.

Gardner's Multiple Intelligences

Multiple Intelligences Examples
1. Logical/ Mathematical Find distance, latitude, longitude, time, and pressure using maps.
3. Visual/Spatial Analyze maps using GIS technology
4. Intrapersonal Research on own
7.  Naturalist Analyze the world around them (Weather, Plate Tectonics, Time Zones, Landforms)

NJ CORE CURRICULUM CONTENT STANDARDS

SOCIAL STUDIES

STANDARD 6.6 (GEOGRAPHY) ALL STUDENTS WILL APPLY KNOWLEDGE OF SPATIAL RELATIONSHIPS AND OTHER GEOGRAPHIC SKILLS TO UNDERSTAND HUMAN BEHAVIOR IN RELATION TO THE PHYSICAL AND CULTURAL ENVIRONMENT

1.  Use maps to find the longitude and latitude of locations and time zones on US and World maps

2. Measure distances between locations that are identified by using a GIS or GPS map

Science

STANDARD 5.8 (EARTH SCIENCE) ALL STUDENTS WILL GAIN AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE STRUCTURE, DYNAMICS, AND GEOPHYSICAL SYSTEMS OF THE EARTH.

1. Explain how the Earth's plate tectonics are connected to locations of volcanoes and earthquakes

2. Forecast the weather in states by interpreting maps showing Low and High Pressure

STANDARD 5.4 (NATURE AND PROCESS OF TECHNOLOGY) ALL STUDENTS WILL UNDERSTAND THE INTERRELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY AND DEVELOP A CONCEPTUAL UNDERSTANDING OF THE NATURE AND PROCESS OF TECHNOLOGY.

1.  Use the Internet to research information on weather, plate boundaries, time zones

2.  Utilize data gathered from geographic information systems (GIS) and global positioning systems (GPS)
