Step 1:

  • You and TWO partners team up to solve the case of Mickey's Stolen Palm Pilot.
  • Each group will be given a case file that includes: the directions, a key to the different rides in the Magic Kingdom, and one copy of the code.
  • You will be given clues that lead to different stops in Disney World's Magic Kingdom. Use the key to help make sense of the clues.
  • Each stop will present you with one math problem.
  • Solving each math problem correctly will give you a letter for the secret code that leads to the thief.
  • You must complete all 12 math problems to solve the case.
  • Each student is responsible for showing work for their the math problems.
  • The group will decide each persons role throughout this activity.
    • Role 1: Your specialty will be Geometry. You will solve math problems related only to geometry.
    • Role 2: Your specialty will be Weights and Distance. You will solve math problems related only to weights and distance.
    • Role 3: Your specialty will be Costs and Dimensions. You will solve math problems related only to costs and dimensions.
  • ** Round all answers to the nearest whole number**
  • When each of you are done with your part, at the end you will all come together to crack the code and help Mickey find his palm pilot so he can keep track of all of his parades and appearances!
  • When you've cracked the case your team is to turn in all the work and the answer to the code.

Step 2:

  • After completing your word problems you will view web pages that are related to your specialty. The student fulfilling Role 1 will view the links pertaining to Role 1 on the Resources page.
  • The Student fulfilling Role 2 will view the links pertaining to Role 2 on the Resources page.
  • The Student fulfilling Role 3 will view the links pertaining to Role 3 on the Resources page.
  • After viewing your pages each student will write a 1-3 page paper on their specialty.

Step 3:

  • After each student has completed their paper you will now combine your knowledge to create your own roller coaster ride for Disney World.
  • You will build the ride together but each student will be responsible for using their specialty to make the roller coaster work, be safe, and profitable.
  • Go to the following website: http://www.learner.org/interactives/parkphysics/coaster/
and follow the steps to build your roller coaster.
  • When you have finished building your roller coaster print a picture of the roller coaster you designed.
  • Click on the safety inspection after completing your roller coaster and print it out.
  • Create a presentation of your choice, other than a drawing: i.e. legos, playdo, connects, construction paper, etc.
  • In your design, come up with the following
    1. Costs of material
    2. Cost and amount of land needed for ride
    3. Price to ride roller coaster
    4. Height and weight limits
