The Great Kapok Tree

About the The Great Kapok Tree

The Great Kapok Tree: A Tale of the Amazon Rain Forest  written and illustrated by Lynne Cherry is a story of a man who is sent into the Amazon rainforest. He goes to chop down a great kapok tree.

The man grows tired from the heat and falls asleep, as he sleeps, animals emerge from the jungle canopy to beg the sleeping man to spare their home. A boa constrictor, bees, monkeys, birds, tree frogs, a jaguar, porcupines, anteaters, a three-toed-sloth, and even a child of the Yanomamo tribe all whisper into the man’s ear. "Senhor, when you awake, please look upon us all with new eyes." The forest's creatures convince the woodcutter to leave the great kapok tree standing in the rainforest.

The perspective from the wildlife helps the reader to understand the importance of preserving the rainforests.
