This website is intended for teacher and student use for third and forth grade students. There are a variety of ways that teachers can implement the teaching tools in this site.

Literacy and Reading: The projects and information found in this site can be used in correlation with reading The Great Kapok Tree. Students can learn more about rainforest animals, and as an extension, do simple projects to reinforce their learning.

Science: This website can be used to reinforce a science unit on the rainforest or biomes of the world. It can be used to help students understand the importance of conservation during your classroom study of Earth Day.

Research Skills: You may be introducing research skills. This website is a great way to have students practice taking notes without the fear of entering inappropriate sites.

Create A Test

Students are asked to create a test to demonstrate understanding of the book. Each student is responsible for writing and illustrating one multiple choice question. Collect the questions and make it into a test for the students. To ensure varied levels of higher thinking, you can give students prompt words to begin their questions with in correlation of Bloom's Taxonomy. Create A Test

This unit can be used to teach or reinforce three types of poems; cinquains, haikus, and concrete poems. Click here to go to the poetry page.

Create A Test

Other skills include comparing and contrasting, cause and effect using Inspiration, or Kidspiration, and creating a diorama. Writing activities include writing a newspaper article or a postcard.

Standard 3.1 (reading) all students will understand and apply the knowledge of sounds, letters, and words in written English to become independent and fluent readers, and will read a variety of materials and texts with fluency and comprehension.

     Building upon knowledge and skills gained in preceding grades, by the end of Grade 3, students will:

Standard 5.5 (characteristics of life) all students will gain an understanding of the structure, characteristics, and basic needs of organisms and will investigate the diversity of life.

     Building upon knowledge and skills gained in preceding grades, by the end of Grade 4, students will:

           A. Matter, Energy and Organization in Living Systems

                  1. Identify the roles that organisms may serve in a food chain.

Standard 5.10 (environmental studies) all students will develop an understanding of the environment as a system of interdependent components affected by human activity and natural phenomena.

     Building upon knowledge and skills gained in preceding grades, by the end of Grade 4, students will:

           A. Natural Systems and Interactions

                  1. Differentiate between natural resources that are renewable and those that are not.

           B. Human Interactions and Impact

                  1. Explain how meeting human requirements affects the environment.
