The Hundred Dresses Tutorial

Again, if you haven't read The Hundred Dresses, here is a short summary of the book.

Background

Wanda Petronski wore the same faded blue dress to school every day.  It was always clean, but it looked as though it had never been ironed properly.  One day when a classmate showed up wearing a bright new dress that was much admired, Wanda said suddenly, "I have a hundred dresses at home."  That started the teasing game of dresses, which Peggy and Maddie played with Wanda.  It was fun to stop Wanda on the way to school and ask, "How many dresses did you say you had?"  Wanda did have the hundred dresses, and this is the story of how Peggy and Maddie came to understand about them and what the game meant to Wanda.  (taken from the back cover of The Hundred Dresses by Eleanor Estes.)

Again, you should know that the children will complete most of the project in school.  There may be times when they are required to take a portion of the assignment home.  The following tips may help you for those times.

1.  They will have to do the Hundred Dresses contest at home.  Let them decide what category they want to make the dress for, and what the dress will look like.  Once they have done that, you will probably have to help by getting the materials that are to be put on the dress.  Let your child apply all of the materials to the dress.  They will have to complete the journal at home and at school.  When they are home working on it, encourage them to write what they feel.

2.  For the second activity, the children will be mostly working at school.  They will have questions for you about your ancestry.  Try to help them the best you can with that portion.

3.  The third activity will also be completed at school, because they must interview a classmate.

4.  Again, you may proofread their work for mistakes, but do it with them and ask them questions like, "Does that really end with a period?  I thought it was a question."  That way this will allow them to build proofreading skills.

Hopefully these activities will give you a way to relate to your children because you can now share in the literature they are reading!
