Project Overview

Students will be using GIS to locate male and female mathematicians who were born in different places around the world.  They will   fill in a printed out form for each mathematician that they choose and then take the information that they filled in and make a power point presentation of their work.  This will be considered a long term project (2-3 weeks).

Lesson Plan

INTENDED GRADE LEVEL: 9-12 Grade Mathematics

OBJECTIVES:

T.S.W.B.A.T. research famous mathematicians and understand their famous  
contributions to modern mathematics

T.S.W.B.A.T. use technology to form a PowerPoint Presentation

CURRICULUM CONTENT: History, Mathematics, and Technology

N.J.C.C.S.:

Language Arts & Literacy

3.1 Reading : The students will read internet websites when they are finding research based on the Matheamticians that they chose.

3.2 Writing: The students will be writing out the information that they researched on a printed out form

3.3 Speaking: The students will be presenting their research orally when they make their powerpoint presentation.

3.4 Listening: The students will be listening to their classmates presentations.

Mathematics

4.5 Mathematical Processes: The students will be communicating mathematical ideas, concepts, and formulas that they find in their research. They will also be making mathematical connections between what they research and the math that they are presently learning.

Social Studies

6.1 Social Studies Skills: The students will analyze the impact that a historical time period had on a mathematicians life and discoveries.

6.6 Geography: The students will be using a GIS map to locate where famous mathematicians were born.

Technology

8.1 Computer and Information Literacy: The students will use the computer to locate mathematicians on a map, understand their project, and do their project reserach.

LESSON OUTLINE:

1. The students will use GIS Map to locate four mathematicians
2. The students will research information on their mathematicians.
3. The students will fill in four worksheets related to their mathematicians.
4. The students will make up a title page and works cited page for their research.
5. The students will make a powerpoint presentation.

ASSESMENT:

The students will assessed on written project and their presentation. It will count as a test grade.
