Topic |
Probability |
|
Goal |
To have students discover the concept or
probability and risk through simulated games |
|
Concept and Performance Objectives |
The concept objective is that students will
learn the history of probability and risk, and understand how
they are related to decisions that they make. They
will describe how accurate predictions can make them make better
choices in life. The performance objective is that the
students will connect mathematical principles to predict whether
it is possible to win something, or tell how often something is
likely to occur. |
|
Student Outcomes |
Students will demonstrate the objectives by
filling in worksheets that accompany the game activities.
They will share and compare their results with a classmate and
create their own board game based on probability. At the
end of the WebQuest the students will find five probability
problems that they would like to learn how to solve. |
|
Length of Time |
The WebQuest will be completed in one week (55
Minute Periods) |

Mathematics
The students will......
4.1 Number and Numerical Operations
1. Perform standard numerical operations
2. Recognize the limitations of estimation
3. Assess the amount of error resulting from
estimation
4.3 Patterns and Algebra
1. Solve problems using patterns
4.4 Data Analysis, Probability, and Discrete Mathematics.
1. Understand the concepts and techniques of
probability
2. Use probability to Model Situations
4.5 Mathematical Processes
1. Learn probability through problem solving and
discovery
2. Use communication to organize and clarify their
mathematical thinking
3. Recognize recurring themes in probability
4. Recognize that mathematics is used in a variety of
ways in fields outside of mathematics.
5. Make and investigate mathematical conjectures
6. Create a concrete representation (a game)
7. Use technology to gather, analyze, and
communicate mathematical information.
|
|
Thinking and Communication Skills |
Bloom's Taxonomy
1. Knowledge: The students will use their knowledge about games
and chance to fill in their record sheets.
2. Comprehension: The students will estimate
results and make generalizations based upon their recordings.
3. Application: The students will make conjectures.
4. Analysis: The students will answer questions
that break down the material and outline the different steps
in solving probabilities
5. Synthesis: The students will create their own
game based on probability.
6. Evaluations: The students will compare their results with a
classmate and use a grading rubric to earn a grade. |
