The wind was gusting around the transport truck as it made its way down the mountain toward Millersville. A heavy rain made the road slick; the driver downshifted as his truck carrying hazardous waste descended quickly toward the bridge spanning the Millersville Lake. |
| Suddenly, a bolt of lightning struck a
tree, causing it to fall in front of the truck as it approached the bridge!
The driver swerved quickly to avoid the tree, but the evasive maneuver on the
slick road caused the truck to flip over and roll into the cold dark water of Millersville Lake.
Luckily, the driver was able to swim to safety.

Unfortunately, the impact on the truck caused a major problem for the people and the environment surrounding Millersville: dangerous mercuric chloride stored in barrels in the truck split open and spilled their contents into the lake, a source of fishing and the main source of drinking water for thousands of Millersville residents!
|
How will the mercuric chloride threaten a quiet and serene setting such as this?
What will happen to the health of the people of Millersville due to toxic water and fish?
What will happen to the plant and animal life living in and around Millersville Lake?
