By completing
this WebQuest, we hope that you have gathered and been presented
with enough information to make an educated decision about the use
of Teflon. You have listened to two sides of a debate - both
the pro-Teflon (the Chef and the Chemist) and the anti-Teflon (the
Health Inspector and the EPA Expert) perspectives.
The
Chef and the Chemist praised the non-stick virtues of the material,
claiming that the health risks were minimal. Conversely, the
Health Inspector and the EPA Expert stated just the opposite and
indicated that the potential health risks could be great.
Which side presented their argument with the greatest level of
quantifiable evidence? Who should the WHO (World Health
Organization) rule in favor
of?
Take the
information researched in the WebQuest and apply it to your own
life:
- Do you
think that the benefits of the non-stick coating outweigh the
potential health and environmental risks associated with it?
- Should we,
as consumers, risk our health solely for convenience?
- If your
parents were in the market for a new set of cookware, would you advise them to buy non-stick or not, and why?
How would you convince them to take your recommendation?
