Your
task as a team is to investigate some of the environmental and
health issues that have been linked to the manufacture and use of
Teflon. Your team will investigate the claims of various groups and
will analyze and evaluate the information gathered in order to
formulate an opinion as to the truth of these claims. Each team
member must report their findings to the group while looking to
establish, or break, connections with each others research findings.
The experts in your group will then present their findings to
the WHO (World Health Organization) and try to persuade them to
either support the bill for passage, or not.
Your team consists of an EPA
agent, a health inspector, a chemist, and a representative of a professional
chef's group. Though on opposite sides of the issue, all team members will share
all data collected with other members of the team in the name of the open,
honest search for the truth. The presentation of your findings will be in a
debate format where each member of the team must present their professional
opinion with supporting evidence from their research. There must also be
some sort of visual presentation (charts, graphs, PowerPoint, or other visuals)
and the individual shall be prepared to answer questions from the opposing side.
The debate format will be as
follows:
-
Each expert witness has five minutes to present their
opinion and display any factual evidence that helps support their opinion .
-
The opposing view-point will have
two minutes to make a rebuttal.
-
The roles in the debate will switch with the
same time allowed for presentation and rebuttal.
-
Each team's view point will be allowed a three minute
summation of what they consider to be the most important points from their
research.
Each member of the team must
evaluate their research based on the following issues and main questions:
-
What, if any, are the health issues related
to this material?
-
What, if any, are the societal issues related
to this material?
-
What, if
any, are the environmental issues related to this material?
