Brainy Bits

Cross-curricula Connections:

Students  have the opportunity to write and publish their own writing.  Students are asked to creat a brochure with all the interesting facts that they learn about their assigned city and need to persuade others in their class that the city would make a great weekend trip, day trip, or summer vocation destination.  Students will be given the GIS worksheet that will help them organize their information,  as well a handout with websites to use for research.

During math class, students visit the Mappler site to view a teacher created example.   Students can use designated class time to submit the general information and find an attractive picture of one of their city's sites.  They will also navigate from their hometown to their destination  and figure out the major highways and roads that would make the best route to their city.

Students are to use an evaluation checklist as a guide to help them fulfill all the requirments.  They are also asked to use an editing checklist for the writing part of the lesson.  Students will work as professionals and carefully edit their work and present it to their classmates.  The overall appearance of the brochure and the map component will be assessed at the end of this lesson.

Sense and Meaning

The lesson has sense and meaning attached to it because it demonstrates  real life skills that involves planning and thinking.  Students will have the opportunity to think like adults and take ownership of something original.  This lesson is unique and will stand out in a child's memory.
