The Native American Wars

Background

During the late-nineteenth-century the U.S. government encouraged western expansion onto the Great Plains.

A major obstacle to successful settlement was the number of Native American tribes living on the land.

When gold and silver were found in the west, and more settlers wanted to move there, the U.S. government removed the Native Americans from their tribal lands and sent them to live on reservations.

Many Native American groups fought back in order to resist removal, resulting in years of battles between the U.S. Army and the Native American Tribes, and the near destruction of western Native American nations.

Native American Homes

Native Americans lived on the Great Plains.  When they refused to move to reservations, it was the responsibility of the U.S. army to make them move.
