The Wild West

A WebQuest for American History I Students

Introduction

You have spent the past few weeks studying the facts and folklore of the 19th Century American West.  In order to reward you for the hard work that you have done, your history teacher decided to take your class on a field trip to Wild West City in Netcong, NJ.  At Wild West City you will have the opportunity to experience "The Best of the West in the Heart of the East". A group of students wearing cowboy hatsThe day is finally here.  As you wait for the bus in the front lobby of the school you are all ready for the trip.  You and your friends decided to emerge yourself in the culture of the Old West, so you dressed up in your finest cowboy attire and have filled your I-Pods with the best country-western music you could find.
The bus ride only took about forty-five minutes and you are now entering the parking lot.  As soon as all of the students have exited the bus, your teacher hands out the itinerary for the day and asks you all to follow it carefully.  On the top of the page it clearly states that you must meet back at the bus at 1:00 sharp.  In order to get back to school on time the bus must leave promptly, so the penalty for being late is Saturday morning detention for one month.  Your teacher reminds you of some last minute rules, and now you are all free to wonder The City. Four students sitting on a bench... changes to a red train rideDuring the day you have spent most of your time with three of your friends.  Together you have ridden on the train and the stagecoach, watched the cowboys perform their rope tricks, petted the horses, and listened to some music in the saloon.  It is now about 12:45 and you realize that you need to start making your way back to the bus.

While walking toward the through the town, you recap the parts of the day that you enjoyed the most.  You see a few classmates that you have not run into all day, and as you turn to call out to them, you trip over a log and cannot catch your balance.  You start to fall, and it seems like forever before you hit the ground, but when you do, you hit hard, and you smack your head on the log.  You try to ask for help, but just as you open your mouth to speak, everything just turns black.

Three cowboys riding horsesWhen you wake up you have no idea what happened.  Then you feel the bump on your head and realize that you fell.  Your friends help you to your feet and you hear a sound that is slightly familiar.  As you try to think about where you've heard it before, you're pushed out of the way.  When you turn around you see that men on horseback have just passed by at full gallop.  Then you hear gunshots.  The next thing you know the sheriff mounts his horse and rides after the other men.  You are even more confused than before.  When you start asking people questions about what is happening you realize that you are no longer at Wild West City, you are actually in the Wild West!

Somehow you have left the 21st century and returned to the 19th century.  Your friends tell you that you were on your way home from school when the local bank was held up, and that you were lucky to be pushed out of the way before the shots were fired.  You think everyone is crazy, but then you realize...

It could be fun to live in the Wild West!
