What is area?

Area is the amount of space a 2 dimensional figure covers.  It is measured in square units.

Formulas:

Rectangle A = length x width
Square A = side x side or side2
Parallelogram A = base x height
Triangle A = 1/2 x base x height
Circle A = πr2
Trapezoid A = 1/2 x height x (base1 + base2)

Example 1:  Find the area of the rectangle.
8 in by 3 in rectangle

A = lw
A = 8(3)
A = 24 square inches

Example 2:  Find the area of a triangle with a base of 9 inches and a height of 12 inches.

A = 1/2(b)(h)
A = 1/2(9)(12)
A = 1/2(108)
A = 54 square inches

Example 3:  Find the area of a circle with a radius of 8 inches.

A = πr2
A = 3.14(82)
A = 3.14(64)
A = 200.96 in2

Example 4:  Find the area of the following trapezoid.

h = 6 cm
b1 = 8 cm
b2 = 12 cm

A = 1/2(h)(b1 + b2)
A = 1/2(6)(8 + 12)
A = 1/2(6)(20)
A = 3(20)
A = 60 square centimeters

Once you have tried the examples above and studied the formulas, you are ready to practice what you have learned!
