LESSON PLAN
Famous Faces of New Jersey is an interactive mapping project. This project has fourth graders collecting data on famous New Jerseyans. As the students become involved in this project, they become more familiar with the Mappler application and the geographic location corresponding to their famous person.
Target Audience:
My audience is 4th grade resource center students who are taught in a small group setting. This lesson will take about 1-2 weeks to complete.
Objectives:
Students will learn about several famous people from New Jersey.
Students will learn where their famous person comes from in New Jersey by using technology such as Mappler.
Students will learn about New Jersey’s geography and map skills.
Students will understand the contributions of these individuals
Materials:
Social Studies books, computers, outlines, and pencils
Procedures:
Students will be introduced to the Mappler website.
Students will chose a famous NJ person that I have already marked on the map using Mappler
Students will be collecting information on their person using the websites provided for them.
Students will use an outline that I have created for them.
Students will use the outline to create a report on that famous person.
Students will be presenting their report to the class.
Anticipatory Set:
After reading and discussing Unit 5 Meet the People, in our NJ books, students will go to the computer lab. I will show them a website that goes along with this unit, also called Meet the People at www.sfsocialstudies.com We will talk about the lives of these significant people and the contributions they made to NJ. I will then explain to them that for the next week or two, we will be meeting in the lab and finding out about other famous New Jerseyans from a website that I created for them.
Closure:
The students will research their famous person using the websites I have provided them with. They will start to fill out their outlines that I have made up for them.The overall closure activity for this lesson will be a report given on their famous person.
Evaluation:
A rubric will used to grade students on their report. They will also be graded on the use of the Mappler website.
Extension Activity:
Students will dress up as their famous NJ person when reading their report to the class.Another activity would to provide a poster with picture of their famous NJ person and use it as a visual aide when giving their report.
