This is a multimedia unit on Right Triangles and Trigonometry for a high school geometry honors level class. The unit utilizes Microsoft Power Point and Publisher to create three unit projects: a Brochure, a Web site and a Presentation. Each project is utilized to enrich the unit and help students become more active in their learning and to also help them better retain the new information. Students, today, are more inclined to learn when given an opportunity to work with technology and produce tangible items with their new knowledge. It is my hope that my students will better be able to answer the questions "When am I ever going to use this?" and "Why do I need to learn Geometry?" after completing this unit.
The unit includes topics on Properties of Similar Right Triangles, Pythagorean Theorem, Properties of Special Right Triangles and Right Triangle Trigonometry. Students will be introduced to each topic through lecture, class assignments and geometry labs. The students will research the Pythagorean Theorem, Pythagoras and the Pythagorean Society. They will then display what they have learned by creating a brochure from the perspective of a member in the Pythagorean Society, creating a web site to discuss right triangles and trigonometry in the "real-world" in addition to the results of a geometry lab to be conducted on the school campus and within their town and lastly they will create a Power Point Presentation to help classmates review for the end of unit assessment.
