Technology at Work: The New Day-Off at Work
What has happened to the work ethic in the business world? Why are many employees violating the company policies at work? Who or what is to blame?
According to Martha McKay of The Record, businesses in general are losing money because employees are not focusing on their work, but on the Internet. Many employees are surfing the Internet for many reasons and it is jeopardizing the outcome of the company's bottom line. Employees check e-mail, chat with other people, buy merchandise and do illicit activities, such as a side business passing trade secrets.
The companies have turned to a computer consulting company, BDE Computer Services in Clifton, NJ. This company has installed on the company's server a key-logger program that records all keystrokes and mouse clicks then is saved in a file and sent to the administrator to be checked later. According to the American Management Association, 25% of employees that were fired were due to misuse of the Internet. There is another type of monitoring program that businesses use and that blocks individual web sites listed by the company. This program is known as Websense.
Why do employers have to spend more money because of unethical employees? Why do we have to pay for it at the end? What has happened to the work ethic? Employees should remain focus and do what they are being paid to do and not shirk their responsibilities at work. There is a time and a place for everything and this is not the time or the place!
