        Extension Activities

To introduce this activity the video "Volcano Under the City", may be viewed. It is available
as part of the PBS-Nova series.  It discusses the aftermath of the devastating 2002 eruption of
Mt. Nyiragonga Volcano in central Africa, and possible future eruptions.  There is also a suggested
lab activity on this site to simulate different magma types.

          Volcano Crossword Puzzle

        Jan 12 2006. <http://www.geology.sdsu.edu/how_volcanoes_work/>.

The objectives that will be covered while doing this web quest are:

   - to understand the  relationship between plate tectonics and volcanism

   - to compare and contrast 3 types of volcanoes

   - to research the technology used to predict eruptions

    - to be able to discuss preparedness and propose a disaster plan for evacuation

    - to trace the history of a particular volcano’s eruptions

    - to describe the  geographical area and population surrounding the volcano

The N.J.C.C.C. Standards that will be covered are:

       Science

       5.1 Scientific Processes
           B. inquiry and problem solving

       5.2 Science and Society
           B. historical perspectives

       5.8 Earth Science
           A. Earth’s properties and materials
           C. processes that shape the Earth

      Technological Literacy

8.1  Computer and Information Literacy
       A. basic computer tools and skills

B. application of productivity tools

        Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligences

At least 5 of Gardner's multiple intelligences can be incorporated into this activity.
The geographer will connect with the Naturalistic Learner as he studies natural phenomenon
and how things work. If a model is built, or maps included, he also touches on the
Spatial Learner. If an interview is conducted, the Interpersonal  Learner gets  involved.

The Linguistic Learner is defined in the historian as he relates the dates and facts of past
eruptions. Finally, the Logical/Mathematical Learners will be best suited for the roles of geologist
and disaster manager. The geologist will have to look for patterns related to magma type , proximity to
a fault, and explosiveness. The disaster manager will have to use his problem solving skills to develop
what course of action to take.

         Bloom's Taxonomy

All 6 levels of Bloom's Taxonomy are touched on by the questions
each student must answer to do this activity. General
knowledge is
used to relay the facts about past volcanic eruptions.
Comprehension
is needed to compare and contrast 3 volcanic forms. Students will need
to develop a plan to insure local residents will be in a safe location if
          an eruption takes place,
application. For the analysis part, students
will look for relationships between the type of magma, their volcano's
location relative to a fault, and its explosiveness. They will use
synthesis
to predict when, and how bad, the next eruption will be. And finally,
          the
evaluation would be when they justify their plan of action for
          an evacuation route.
