So you need a new computer?

Ask yourself three questions:

What advice would you give them?

My advice is to shop through a major retailer like Best Buy. I have several reasons for this suggestion. First, they will be in business tomorrow. Second, they offer extended warranties beyond the manufacturer. The extended warranty covers many things and can be a great idea. That said, read the brochure and do not skip the fine print. Third, if you have a problem, you will likely have a store near you at which you can be assisted should a problem arise. Always review the return policy, including any restocking fees associated with a non-defective product. I do not like Dell, for the same reasons mentioned. When a Dell fails, and a large percentage fail, you are left with no recourse other than the telephone. Shopping at a brick and mortar lets you go to a place and speak to a person.

The scenario:

An associate has a child going to college in September. This friend has no clue about how to spend his money wisely. The student will need Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. Should he buy a laptop or a desktop? The student wants a laptop, so she can "take it to class to type notes." The father is concerned about, well, everything. The budget for this expenditure hovers near $1000-.

I recommend weighing the options of one versus the other. The life expectancy for this purchase can easily be four years (or more if she goes to Grad School).

The student will need Office Home and Student 2007 $149- @ Best Buy. This suite includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and One Note. One Note is similar to an electronic spiral notebook. It is useful for taking notes and making lists. I use it regularly.

A USB key drive is also useful for backing up important files. Its portability also allows you to avoid that "Oh no!" moment in class when the professor calls for papers and you forgot yours in your room. If you have it on your key drive, you can simply print it in the nearest computer lab. The same key drive also permits working on papers, etc. on any computer.          A SanDisk  4 Gb USB key drive costs $39.99 @ Best Buy.

If a laptop is purchased, a sturdy backpack designed for this function must be purchased. Samsonite Hardshell Notebook Case $44.99 @ Best Buy.
