| Issue: Sharks are some of the fastest creatures on Earth. The Mako shark in turn is the fastest of the sharks. One of the reasons for their quickness is the shark’s skin. The ridges in the pattern of a shark’s skin make the water move more quickly over the animal by channeling the water across its skin. The sport of swimming has discovered how to harness this agility. A new swimsuit copies the same pattern as the shark, resulting in quicker lap times in the pool. The result has been enveloped in a debate that ranges from high school competitions to the Olympic level. Should only swimmers who can afford this luxury be allowed to wear the skin? Should the product be banned in competitive events? |
