Goals and Objectives: The goal of this web quest is for children to understand how we use our five senses of the body and to begin to think about how we use them.  The student is also responsible for finding information, answering questions, and presenting this information to his or her classmates.

 

The student will be able to:

1.  Investigate the five senses.

2.  Draw a monkey and label the parts of the five senses.

3.  Compare and contrast how humans have senses that help them detect internal and external cues ... so do animals.

4.  Students will write a page about "My five senses" along with the pictures.

5.  Student will present information to his or her peers clearly.

New Jersey Core Curriculum Standards:

Standard 3.1  Reading; All students will understand and apply the knowledge of sounds, letters, and words in written English to become independent and fluent readers, and will read a variety of materials and texts with fluency and comprehension.

Standard 3.2 Writing; All students will write in clear, concise, organized language that varies in content and form for different audiences and purposes.

Standard 3.3 Speaking; All students will speak in clear, concise, organized language that varies in content and form for different audiences and purposes.

Standard 3.4 Listening; All students will listen actively to information from a variety of sources in a variety of situations.

Standard 3.5 Viewing and media literacy; All students will access, view, evaluate, and respond to print, non-print, and electronic texts and resources.

Standard 5.1 Scientific Process; All students will develop problem-solving, decision-making and inquiry skills, reflected by formulating usable questions and hypotheses, planning experiments, conducting systematic observations, interpreting and analyzing data, drawing conclusions, and communicating results.

Standard 8.1  Computer and information literacy; All students will use computer applications to gather and organize information and to solve problems.

 

Learning Styles:

Concrete Sequential - The concrete sequential learner prefers organization and dedicates time to detail.  This student will work best with reading information online at their own pace.  The student will also succeed in preparing the poster.

Abstract Sequential - The abstract sequential learner enjoys learning through lecture and reading.  This student will work best in listening to each group member present as well as present themselves.

Concrete Random - The concrete random learner learns best through independent activities and likes to explore.  This type of learner will enjoy moving around the web quest and finding information on different sights.  He or she will also work well creating the poster.

Abstract Random - The abstract random learners are imaginative and prefer to take risks.  This student will be interested in helping a monkey and want to teach it something new.  This type of learner will also enjoy creating an original poster.

Multiple Intelligences:

Linguistic - The student will orally present information to their group members.

Visual/Spatial - The student must create a poster of a monkey, labeling each of the five senses.

Bodily - The student must be able to manage a mouse on the computer and be able to navigate the web quest.

Interpersonal - The student must be able to read the information he or she has researched and present it to the class.

Intrapersonal - The student must research information independently and answer a set of questions.  He or she must also answer the questions on their own.

Bloom's Taxonomy:

Knowledge:  The student will label the five senses on the poster.

Comprehension:  The student will read information on the five senses and be able to use this in answering questions .

Application:  The student will be able to use the information they found about the five senses and apply it to the world and life of a monkey.

Analysis:  The student will compare and contrast the differences in how a monkey uses its fives senses to that of how we do.

Synthesis:  The student will express their feelings orally about their projects and their classmate's projects.  Would they do anything differently?  What project did they most enjoy and why. 

Evaluation:  The student will use the following "Evaluation Page" to assess their own work.

Primary / Recency Effect:

Prime Time 1:  Read through website on the five senses.

Down Time:  Create a poster of a monkey and label its parts.

Prime Time 2:  Answer the questions using the information the students found.

Sense and Meaning:

Since every student uses their five senses every day, this web quest is meaningful to them. The students will make connections between how a monkey uses its senses compared to how they use theirs.
