Goal:

Students will develop an understanding of plant growth and the functions of each plant part.

Objectives:

1. Students will be able to identify each plant part and its functions.

2. Students will be able to identify each stage of the plants life cycle.

3. Students will create a book to show the stages of growth from seed to plant and label each plant part.

Learning Styles Addressed:

Concrete Sequential - drawing plant parts and researching their functions; creating book

Abstract Sequential - creating book; researching stages of growth

Concrete Random - working in groups to create book; drawing pictures of plant parts and identifying functions; labeling plant parts; research on internet

Abstract Random - drawing pictures of plant parts; listening to story; singing song; identifying plants life cycle from seed to plant; emotional connection to the loss of the flowers

Multiple Intelligences Addressed:

Musical - singing of song "Plant a Little Seed"; listening to story.

Interpersonal - working in groups to create book; singing song; listening to story

Bodily - Kinesthetic - drawing plant parts, creating book

Verbal - Linguistic - singing song; working with groups; presentation of book

Visual - Spatial - looking at pictures from story; using internet links; drawing plant parts; creating book

Intrapersonal - using internet links; drawing pictures of plant parts, completing worksheet; completing their own job assigned for group work.

Naturalistic - identifying plant parts and functions throughout WebQuest

New Jersey Core Content Standards:

3.1 READING ALL STUDENTS WILL UNDERSTAND AND APPLY THE KNOWLEDGE OF SOUNDS, LETTERS, AND WORDS IN WRITTEN ENGLISH TO BECOME INDEPENDENT AND FLUENT READERS, AND WILL READ A VARIETY OF MATERIALS AND TEXTS WITH FLUENCY AND COMPREHENSION.

3.2 WRITING ALL STUDENTS WILL WRITE IN CLEAR, CONCISE, ORGANIZED LANGUAGE THAT VARIES IN CONTENT AND FORM FOR DIFFERENT AUDIENCES AND PURPOSES.

3.4 LISTENING ALL STUDENTS WILL LISTEN ACTIVELY TO INFORMATION FROM A VARIETY OF SOURCES IN A VARIETY OF SITUATIONS.

5.1 Scientific Processes All students will develop problem-solving, decision-making and inquiry skills, reflected by formulating usable questions and hypotheses, planning experiments, conducting systematic observations, interpreting and analyzing data, drawing conclusions, and communicating results.
5.4 Nature and Process of Technology All students will understand the interrelationships between science and technology and develop a conceptual understanding of the nature and process of technology.
5.5 Characteristics of Life All students will gain an understanding of the structure, characteristics, and basic needs of organisms and will investigate the diversity of life.
5.10 Environmental Studies All students will develop an understanding of the environment as a system of interdependent components affected by human activity and natural phenomena.

Primacy/Recency Effect

Primetime 1:  During PT1 of each lesson students are introduced to new material.   Students will sing a song and listen to a story.  During both activities the children will learn about the plant life cycle, and the different functions of each plant part.

Down Time:  During DT the least amount of learning takes place.  Students will be involved in an activity that will reinforce what they learned in PT1.  The children will be working individually to identify the functions of each plant part and the stages of growth for the plants life cycle.

Primetime 2:  According to the Primacy / Recency Effect PT2 is the second most powerful learning position and an important opportunity for the learner to determine sense and meaning (Sousa).  During this time the students will be creating a book describing the plants life cycle, parts and functions.

Bloom's Taxonomy

Evaluation

Presenting their books and explaining the stages of the plants cycle.
Synthesis Plan, create and design their book.
Analysis Putting the stages of the plants life cycle in order.
Application Illustrate the plant parts on index cards and explain the function of each plant part.
Comprehension Create a book explaining the different parts and stages of plant life.
Knowledge What is the function of each stage of the plant life cycle?  Label the different parts of the plant on this worksheet.

Affective Domain

Receipt Exploring through a WebQuest as a new way of learning.
Response A positive learning environment is created by engaging the students through individual and group activities.
Value Children will have a greater appreciation of nature and plant life.
Organization Refining their knowledge of the life cycle of plants and each parts function.  Bringing together each individual job to create the book.
Characterization The individual jobs that each person will have to create the book. Through their presentation they will show their understanding of the content presented in the WebQuest.
