Prior Knowledge
Students have already learned about slavery and a few famous African Americans during the firs three weeks of Black History Month.  Using this prior knowledge, students will better understand the map entry points they analyze during the assignment.

Sense and Meaning
Martin Luther King, Jr. is stressed heavily in the district prior to 7th grade.  Students will easily make sense of this assignment and it will have added meaning because a picture Martin Luther King, Jr. is featured on the home page.

Multiple Intelligences
Musical/Rhythmic - The website begins with the famous "I Have a Dream" speech by Martin Luther King, Jr.  The musical/rhythmic intelligences will will benefit from this approach.
