Title: Famous African Americans

Objectives: All SWBAT

  • create a detailed point on Mappler.

  • complete a worksheet using Mappler.

  • present their Mappler point.

Social Studies Core Curriculum Content Standards:

  • 6.1:A4 – Analyze data in order to see persons and events in context.
    Students will view other students map entries.

  • 6.1:A11 – Summarize information in written, graphic, and oral formats.
    Students will complete the worksheet.

  • 6.4:G1 – Explain the major events, issues, and personalities of the American Civil War including: The role of African Americans
    Students will present their map entry.

  • 6.6:A10 – Describe location technologies, such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning Systems (GPS).
    Students will complete the worksheet.

Materials:

  • website address

  • mappler administration privileges

  • computers with internet access

  • printer

Procedures:

  • An overview of the project will be explained by the teacher and/or through students going to the main website.

  • Students will then review the rubric and the teacher will answer any questions.

  • Students will then view the example entries on the Mappler site.

  • Next, students will create their own map entry on a famous African American that includes a name, date of birth, description, picture, website link, and video link.

  • Each student will then print out a worksheet (or the teacher will have them printed already) and complete it using other students’ map entries.

  • Finally, each student will present his or her map entry with additional information not included on the map.
