Most societies in present day have some type of ruling body; in other words a type of government.  Throughout history, some types of government have been more successful and beneficial to the people (citizens) than others.  In Lois Lowry’s novel The Giver, Jonas is a talented member of the community who eventually becomes a rebel. As he matures he feels the governing bodies of his community, The Elders, are not allowing people to live their lives to the fullest.  You as a member of this society, like Jonas, would like to change things.  You feel that the Elders should not have absolute power, and therefore, should not make life decisions for you and your loved ones.  A small group of you have decided to convene and discuss what type of government will be best for all of you.  In order to make this important decision you must have knowledge of other forms of government.  This activity will help you as a group to gain knowledge and make a more educated decision.
