Overview

This WebQuest is designed to introduce 2nd and 3rd grade students to "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" as a means to help improve our world, as well as provide computer skill practice. In the course of the WebQuest students conduct research, evaluate information, create a product with a partner, and participate in class-wide activities. The WebQuest introduces the concept that it is important to care for our environment, teaches relevant vocabulary, and requires students to collaboratively create a persuasive piece that they present to the class. The WebQuest concludes with a hands-on sorting activity, allowing the students to practice what they have learned.

Goals and Objectives

Goals:

Objectives:

1. Students will have an understanding that in general, people create too much garbage, that garbage is bad for our world, and that we should make less garbage in order to help our community and the planet.

2. Students will be able to define or demonstrate the meaning of "reduce," "reuse," and "recycle." They will be able to share or demonstrate three things they learned about reduce, reuse, recycle.

3. Students will use technology to find information needed in order to complete their team project. As they research, they will record their findings on a document entitled "Planet Protector Journal." (Access to this document requires Adobe Acrobat Reader.)

4. In teams, the students will evaluate the information they collected, select the three most compelling reasons to reduce, reuse, recycle, and be able to explain why they made the choice.

5. In the same teams, the students will either create an informative poster or compose a persuasive letter in order to share the information they learned, and present their finished product to the class.
