Curriculum Standards
Math Standards
STANDARD 4.4 (Data analysis, probability, and discrete mathematics) All students will develop an understanding of the concepts and techniques of data analysis, probability, and discrete mathematics, and will use them to model situations, solve problems, and analyze and draw appropriate inferences from data.
STANDARD 4.5 (Mathematical processes) All students will use mathematical processes of problem solving, communication, connections, reasoning, representations, and technology to solve problems and communicate mathematical ideas.
Language Arts Standards
STANDARD 3.3 (Speaking) All students will speak in clear, concise, organized language that varies in content and form for different audiences and purposes.
Multiple Intelligences
Verbal/Linguistic: oral presentation
Logical/Mathematical: calculating the budget and finding best prices
Visual/Spatial: graphs and power point
Musical/Rythmic: finding musical performances and adding musical components to activities
Body/Kinesthetic:daytime and nighttime activities
Interpersonal: pair, share, and working together
Intrapersonal: reflecting on their own decisions based on information collected for the group
Naturalist: planning outside activities involving parks, memorials and monuments
Learning Styles
Concrete Sequential: The needs of these students are met through completion of the tables and calculations to stay within the budget.
Concrete Random: The needs of these students are met through leadership roles and contributing creative ideas.
Abstract Sequential: The needs of these students are met through their reflections and reevaluations after each group meeting.
Abstract Random: The needs of these students are met through the creativity of the activities provided, relationships with partners and a flexible learning environment.
Bloom's Taxonomy
Knowledge: The first step is to use basic knowledge of math to begin their research.
Comprehension: Using their basic knowledge of numbers they can explain how their budget was decided.
Application: They will apply information from outside resources to help create their budget.
Analysis: They will compare and contrast results with their group and have to reevaluate budgets to stay within the criteria.
Synthesis: Creating their PowerPoint presentations and graphs then presenting them orally.
Evaluation: The groups will be selecting one destination based on information presented by the other groups.
Sense and Meaning
We know that emotions aid the process of storing information to long term memory. Emotions are peaked by the notion that the students will be planning their class trip for the year. This is a very exciting task thereby motivating the students to continue the WebQuest. Information is converted from their working memory to long term storage regions because they are able to make sense of the fact that good vacations require extensive planning.
Transfer
Transfer is the process that enables the use of previous learning in new and different situations. The students are using their knowledge of class trips and basic number sense to create a trip of their own. They will be using problem solving techniques and creative thinking to stay within their budgets and create their trip. During these tasks they will be relating previous class trip experiences to plan educational and entertaining activities.
