Before you begin your mission, take a look at this Rube Goldberg Cartoon. You are going to create something like this! Pair and Share with a partner. Discuss what you think is going on in this cartoon. Can you brainstorm ideas on the process that is happening with this invention? When your discussion is over with your partner, share any ideas and questions you have with your teacher.

NOW, YOU ARE READY TO START THE MISSION.

 FOLLOW THESE STEPS IN ORDER

First, you will work individually on Step #1.  Each person will solve six problems.  In solving these problems, you will learn how to get your message across the enemy lines.

In order to design this invention, you will have a better understanding of how simple machines work and their function. You will also work independently on Steps #1, #2, and #3 to continue your understanding of the six simple machines by identifying pictures or diagrams of the machine, completing a definition chart, and composing a data chart. Then, your teacher will arrange you in a team of three (3) students where you will choose a Team Role.  As a team member, you will have to complete a list of requirements in your role, and then teach other students about your Team Role so that the Team can make choices about their final project, a Rube Goldberg Invention.

Step #2

Did you answer the problems correctly?  If after you researched some of the sites you had some problems, the next step will give you additional information. Follow through with Step #2 to find out!  You will continue to work individually in this step.  In Step #2, you will complete research on the web to determine an appropriate definition for each simple machine.  Click here to start your research  Definition Chart

Step #3

Now you are ready to test your knowledge!  Can you match ten (10) simple machines to their picture or diagram?  Test your skill now.  Click here to go to Pictures

                                      Step #4

Now that each member of your team understands the history and job functions of each simple machine, you will start to work in groups. Your teacher will assign you to a team of three (3) students.  Now, you can start to work on your escape plan. This step in the process will allow you and your team members to begin planning, designing, and building your invention. Once you have planned your invention, you will be ready to plan your escape.
