This is the security checkpoint in Terminal C. You must show your boarding pass to the attendants at the front of the line and then go through the security check point gate where all of your belongings you plan on carrying on board the aircraft and your body is scanned. This scanning does not hurt in any way.
The commercial airliners are waiting at the gates to be either loaded or unloaded with passengers, supplies, and crew members before leaving the gate and ramp area to go to the runway.

Luggage and other items for the cargo area of the plane is placed on luggage carts and driven to and from the airliner to load and unload luggage.
