The assignments from this web site were designed for an
eighth grade Academic Technology Class that meets three times a week for one marking period during the course of the school year. The students basically learn how to use the programs we have available in our computer lab so they can apply these skills when their regular education teachers  bring them to the lab for projects based on their own curriculum.

As the students create the bar graph, they are required to know how to navigate around the internet and this web site, research and use correct information, use Excel to create a bar graph, and use keyboarding and word processing skills.

The brochure is more involved. The teacher should guide the students through this assignment as much as possible in order to accurately place the information, pictures, headings, and text.

A good percentage of the pictures were taken by the author of this web page at Newark International Airport on Saturday, September 17, 2005.

GOALS:  It is my intention to introduce the students to aviation as they take a virtual tour of Newark Liberty International Airport, review map skills, work with statistics, use the internet, and create a bar graph showing statistics and a brochure with pictures and facts while learning how to use several programs available in our Academic Technology Lab.

Objectives:

The students will:

  • Learn to use many features of the Microsoft Excel Program
  • Learn how to use many features of the Microsoft Publisher Program
  • Learn to input data into a spreadsheet and transfer it into a  bar graph using Excel
  • Research and use statistics from a reputable website for the bar graph
  • Review map directions using a map of the airport and an internet site for directions
  • Investigate statistics about on-time airline arrivals and departures
  • Be introduced to aviation vocabulary
  • Understand, navigate, and view a virtual tour of the airport
  • Use correct grammar and spelling while creating the brochure and bar graph
  • Use research to complete a bar graph and brochure
  • Complete all individual assignments within a designated time frame or timely manner

SENSE AND MEANING

Students will store more information if there is a high degree of sense and meaning.

  • Aviation education is important, yet not addressed often in any curriculum.
  • Knowledge of map skills is an important life skill.
  • Learning how to navigate on your own to an airport is a real world issue that can affect every driver.
  • Personal family trips to airports for vacations or picking up or dropping off family and friends has emotional experiences attached to this event.
  • Some students can share their prior experience with others.
  • Students have prior knowledge of the Publisher and Excel programs.
